Jeff Schaefer - Director of Player Development, Head Baseball Instructor

Jeff grew up in Patchogue, NY. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland where he was a First Team All ACC 2nd Baseman and Honorable Mention All-American. Jeff signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 1981 which was the beginning of a 14 year professional career. He is the only player in Charlotte baseball history to win championships with the Charlotte O's and the Charlotte Knights. He broke in to the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox in 1989. He spent 1990-92 with the Seattle Mariners and 1994 with the Oakland A's. CBC is Jeff's vision and baseball is his passion.


Jake Robbins - Instructor

Jake is a Charlotte native graduating from Myers Park High School where he was a two sport All State athlete.  During his senior year of High School he signed a letter of Intent to attend North Carolina State University on a baseball scholarship.  Before attending NCSU Jake decided to sign a contract with the New York Yankees after being drafted that summer in the 11th round.  He spent 7 years with the Yankees before becoming a free agent and moving on to achieve his goal of pitching in the big leagues with the Cleveland Indians in 2004.  Jake just finished his 14th professional season playing with the Chicago Whitesox AAA affiliate Charlotte Knights. 


Rick Rembielak – CBC Diamond Rat Coach

Rick is a Cleveland native who graduated from Central Catholic High School.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from the University of Akron in 1988 and a master’s degree in sports administration form Kent State in 1992.  Rick is a member of the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame, the Stark County Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame.  In 1981, Rick was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles.  He played with teams affiliated with the Orioles, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.  His best professional season was in 1985 with Winston-Salem, a Cubs affiliate.  Rick helped lead the team to the Carolina League title and was name Most Valuable Infielder.  His coaching history entails 6 seasons at Kent State University -assistant coach (1988-93), 11 seasons at Kent State University – Head coach (1994-2004), and Wake Forest – Head coach (2005-2009).


Mike Gardiner

Mike grew up in Canada, where he played both hockey and baseball.  He came to the United States in 1983 when he was recruited by Indiana State University.  Mike was a pitcher at ISU and led the team to its first and only College World Series.  He still holds the all-time record for career wins and has been inducted into the Indiana State University Hall of Fame.  Mike also played for Team Canada and went to the 1984 Olympics, where he was the winning pitcher against the eventual gold medal Japanese team.  After college, Mike was drafted by the Seattle Mariners.  He played professionally for 12 years, over 4 of those years in the major leagues, with the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, and Detroit Tigers.


Michael Shildt - Advisory Board Member, Instructor

Mike is entering his 4th season as area scouting supervisor and minor league instructor with the St. Louis Cardinals. Prior to the Cardinals, Mike, as the head coach at West Charlotte HS, was named the Southwestern 4A coach of the year and the Charlotte Observer coach of the year. As an assistant coach at UNC Charlotte he helped lead the 49ers in 1998 to school records in wins and batting average that still exist.  Shildt opened and operated On Deck Baseball Academy from 2000-2003 helping over 50 players received Division 1 scholarships.  Mike is a Charlotte native having played at and graduated from Olympic High School and UNC Asheville.


Kelvin Torve - Instructor

A Graduate of Oral Roberts University, and a second round draft pick by San Francisco in 1981, Kelvin Torve was traded to the Baltimore Orioles organization and played for the Charlotte O's. He made his major league debut in 1988 with the Minnesota Twins, and returned to the big leagues in 1990-91 with the New York Mets. Kelvin was given #24 by accident in 1991. He was the first Met ever to wear the number since Willie Mays.


Dusty Wathan - Instructor

Dusty grew up in Kansas City, Missouri where his father, John Wathan played for and managed the Kansas City Royals.  He signed his first professional contract in ‘94 with the Seattle Mariners as a catcher and spent 7 years with them.  He later played with the Marlins, Padres, Brewers, and reached the big leagues in 2002 with the Kansas City Royals. He played three years with the Cleveland Indians and finished his playing career this year with the Phillies organization. After 14 years of playing professional baseball, he is currently a manager in the minor leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies.  Dusty now makes his home in Charlotte.


Paul Bruno

Paul grew up in Hicksville, NY.  He is a former Division 1 college player for NY Tech where he earned All-American honors his junior year as a catcher.  During his junior year, Paul was ranked nationally in the top 10 in homeruns, RBI’s and batting average and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 39th round of the 1990 draft.  After several years with the Twins, Paul finished his playing career with the Salt Lake City Trappers.  A graduate of St. John’s, Paul resides in Charlotte, NC with his wife Lisa and their three children; Nicholas, Courtney and Michael.


Patrick Whitted - Instructor

An avid baseball fan and student of the game, Patrick has played competitively since the end of his college career.  Currently, he is playing in the Charlotte Adult Baseball League (CABL) and the Charlotte National Adult Baseball Association (NABA).  Below is a listing of his semi-pro/amateur championships:

Tim Dobos - Instructor

Tim Dobos was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and played his collegiate baseball at the University of Akron where he was a four-year starter. During that time period, he was able to set single season records for strike outs and innings pitched. He was selected All Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher in 1987. He still currently ranks second in school history for strike outs, innings pitched and single season wins, as well as third in all-time career wins with 21. Tim is heavily involved in youth baseball in the Charlotte area. He is on the Board of Directors at Weddington Little League where he is the Coach Development Director. He has also coached local all-star teams, as well as AAU and USSSA teams. In 2006, he coached the 8U AAU State Championship team as well as the National runner up team. Tim resides in Weddington, NC, with his wife Marci and their four children; Kevin, Kelly, Katie, and Kyle. 


 

Mike Trombley

Mike was born in Springfield, Mass. He Graduated from Duke University in 1990. Drafted in the 14th round by the Minnesota Twins in 1989. Mike made his major league debut in 1992, that year he was named Minnesota Twins "Rookie Pitcher of the Year". His big league career lasted 11 years. He played for three organizations, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched in over 500 major league games, almost 800 innings and 700 strikeouts. Mike gave up Eddie Murray's 3000th hit.


Joe Borchard - Instructor

Joe is a Major League Baseball outfielder currently playing for the San Francisco Giants organization. Borchard was the 12th pick of the first round in the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft out of Stanford University (was also a quarterback on the football team) by the Chicago White Sox. Borchard's most notable feat was setting the US Cellular Field home run distance record, yet to be eclipsed at 504 feet off Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Brett Myers.  Along with the White Sox and Giants, Borchard has played for the Seattle Mariners, Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves organizations.  Joe is available for lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-7 p.m.

Kyle Shelton - Instructor

Kyle is a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School, where he was a two time All State performer at shortstop, and the Mecklenburg County Player of the Year in 2004. During his career at the University of North Carolina, the team won the ACC Championship and played in three College World Series.

After graduating from Carolina, Kyle signed with the Chicago White Sox, where his team won the Pioneer League Championship. Kyle is an accomplished hitter in addition to being a player who has excelled in playing multiple positions in college and in professional ball. This past year he played with the Winston Salem Dash and Kannapolis Intimidators.

 


 

Kurt Gouveia - Strength & Conditioning

Kurt is a former professional who played 13 seasons in the NFL and one season in the XFL. During his career, he played for the Washington Redskins(87-94) & (99), the Philadelphia Eagles(95), and the San Diego Chargers(96-98). In 2001, he also played for the Las Vegas Outlaws in the now defunct XFL.  Gouveia played college football for Brigham Young University and was a member of their 1984 National Championship team. He was selected by the Redskins in the eighth round of the 1986 NFL Draft.   Was a member of both their 1987 and 1991 Super Bowl Championship teams. In his 13 NFL seasons, Gouveia played in 184 games and his career totals include 73 starts in 151 regular season games, 819 tackles, ten interceptions, eight forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.  Kurt’s success on the field can be directly attributed to his dedication to strength & conditioning.
